How the end of the Soviet Union created a time traveller

On the evening of December 8th, 1991, at around 8pm, Gorbachev received a top-secret phone call from a physicist professor. The contents of the phone call resulted in an unassuming Russian mechanical engineer travelling further into the future than any person had done before. No, really.
